Become a Mentor

“I am First Gen” connects first-generation SSU college students to SSU faculty, staff, or alumni.

The “I am First Gen” program Helps Students:

1.) Connect with mentors who understand their challenges and can offer advice.
2.) Become more socially and academically integrated into the SSU community
3.) Transition academically, socially, and emotionally to university life
4.) Develop a sense of identity and pride from being the first in their families to attend and graduate from college
5.) Transition from the academic and university life into careers and graduate schools.

By volunteering to be an “I am First Gen” mentor, you will be matched with a Shawnee State student with the major and career interest in which you feel most comfortable as a mentor. The method of contact and number of contacts is up to you.
